Belone esocina is very imperfectly described:
Body with small deciduous scales. Head and snout like Esox belone Linnaeus. Fins short. Dorsal and anal opposite, similar, former little larger. Caudal emarginate. Back green, abdomen white. Length 475 mm.

Scales 337 to 350 in lateral line, 255 predorsal, Dorsal rays 22 or 23; anal 20 or 21; pectoral 13 or 14; ventral 6. Dusky above, silvery white below. Lower lip with flap in young dark brown. Fins yellowish, dusky terminally, posterior half of dorsal dusky or blackish. Reaches 1216 mm.
